The Marvell Alaska Quad transceivers, Marvell Virtual Cable Tester the built-in Virtual Cable Tester feature, utilize Time Domain Reflectometry TDR technology, which enables IT managers and networking equipment manufacturers to remotely analyze the quality and characteristics of the attached cable plant. With Virtual Cable Tester technology, the Alaska devices detect and report potential cabling issues such as pair swaps, pair polarity and excessive pair skew. The transceivers also detect cable opens, shorts or any impedance mismatch in the cable and accurately report--within one meter--the distance of the Marvell Virtual Cable Tester.
Essentially, the Alaska Quad devices integrate, on a single chip, the functionality of a several thousand-dollar cable meter system typically required by IT professionals to handle corporate network service and support issues.

In this mode, the port will "wake-up" when data is received on the line. The Energy Detect mode of the Alaska Quad offers an additional mode of operation whereby the port will send a signal every second indicating that the port is ready for data transmission.
