This advanced Marvell chip technology provides significant benefit to IT managers and network OEMs, allowing for quick identification of potential cable malfunctions, thus reducing equipment returns and service calls and further driving the rapid deployment of Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop. The Marvell Alaska Quad transceivers, Marvell Virtual Cable Tester the built-in Virtual Cable Tester feature, utilize Time Domain Reflectometry TDR technology, which enables IT managers and networking equipment manufacturers to remotely analyze the quality and characteristics of the attached cable plant. With Virtual Cable Tester technology, the Alaska devices detect and report potential cabling issues such as pair swaps, pair polarity and excessive pair skew. The transceivers also detect cable opens, shorts or any impedance mismatch in the cable and accurately report--within one meter--the distance of the Marvell Virtual Cable Tester.

Essentially, the Alaska Quad devices integrate, on a single chip, the functionality of a several thousand-dollar cable meter system typically required by IT professionals to handle corporate network service and support issues.

URGENT: Marvell Virtual Cable Tester: How to test cable category?

Our lowest power, highest integration, smallest form factor Alaska devices continue to lead the industry by now offering the most advanced built-in cable diagnostic feature available on the market today," stated Gary Smerdon, Marvell's Vice President of Marketing for Marvell Virtual Cable Tester Communications Business Group. The Marvell Alaska Quad transceivers integrate a patented "downshift" feature that enables a proper link connection in 2-pair environments.

This enables the network link to seamlessly Marvell Virtual Cable Tester, enabling a plug-and-play connection -- a key advantage and requirement of Ethernet technology. Each port of the Alaska Quad transceiver offers simultaneous support of both copper and fiber interfaces. The device's Media Detect feature automatically senses whether the end-user has inserted a copper cable or a fiber-optic cable, performs Auto-Negotiation and provides seamless plug-and-play configuration. Using the Media Detect feature of the Alaska Quad device, Gigabit switch systems may be developed that support both media types. The Alaska family of Gigabit Ethernet transceivers offers the industry's lowest per-port power consumption. Additionally, the Alaska Quad devices include advanced power management modes, on a per port basis, offering a significant reduction in power when the port is not actively in use.

Marvell's Energy Detect modes of operation offer the user Marvell Virtual Cable Tester ability to power down a data port, and consume less than mW per port. In this mode, the port will "wake-up" when data is received on the line. The Energy Detect mode of the Alaska Quad offers an additional mode of operation whereby the port will send a signal every second indicating that the port is ready for data transmission. These power management modes are also available in the Marvell Alaska Ultra family.

The Alaska Quad devices also offer support for four different timing modes of the RGMII interface, including programmable timing delays, which eliminate the on-board timing delay traces called for in the RGMII specification.
