Now keep in mind this is a motherboard that Intel sends to us as an enthusiast product. To start with, the board will not start because the chassis intrusion alarm is going off and tells me that the case has been opened or fans are unplugged. The minute long repetitive beeping alarm is awesome to listen to. Turned off chassis intrusion detection, same alarm. The manual states that the Fan Control Mode for the CPU header can be turned off, or to manual, but no choice is listed for "off" and manual Intel DX79SI Desktop Board Iflash not allow you to turn off the alarm. I water cool on the test bench and do not use fans. In fact, I did not even have to power down the board because Intel DX79SI Desktop Board Iflash a nifty "refresh media list" option that worked well.
Rebooted, got back into the flash utility again and the utility froze again, rebooted, then showed me "The firmware has detected that a CMOS Checksum Error Occurred. Hit the continue button, which I surprised was there, and booted into a previous install of Windows, but it locked up at the splash screen. I reset this BIOS to optimized defaults and never had another issue. Ran an overnight Torture Test successfully.
I then incubated the DX79SI and started up the system, and the ambient temperature scaled to 51C quite quickly. I then left for San Jose, CA for a few days.
Yeah, I really did. To my chagrin, the DX79SI was stalwart and still processing fully.
Determined to kill this bastard that had caused me so much trouble, I left it incubated and Torture Testing. Intel did fix the idiotic fan issue.

The new public BIOS did not require me to have a fan plugged in, but it still gave me a warning telling me so, and you had to click through the warning, of it would just hang there. Before initiating a BIOS update, be sure to read and precisely follow the instructions included in this document.
