It's a shame the UPS folks missed all of those red "fragile" labels all over the boxes. Fortunately, everything was double-boxed and survived. Reprinted with permission from Vintage-Computer.

I purchased Altair Gadget Serial machine after seeing only a few grainy pictures and wasn't sure what to expect. The machine Altair Gadget Serial definitely used, but was definitely reparable. Several dents and scratches on the case were permanent, but the basics looked pretty good. The interior was dusty and somewhat rusty around the transformersbut basically sound. This unit had a RAM card bouncing around free from shipment. I re-slotted it before snapping this shot. The cards showed the most wear and tear.

It also seems that a previous owner used pliers on the card corners when removing the card. The cards still work however, which is the most important part.

Right now the article just describes 's history. It doesn't say anything about the function. Right now, I don't see any useful aspects in this machine. It can only make LEDs blink. May it be used for something more useful? Yeah I've been scratching my head over this for a long time.

Inside the Altair 8800 vintage computer

I know that the lights Altair Gadget Serial have meant something, binary values of each decimal number or something? In the January Popular Elecronics article, a sidebar is dedicated to listing possible applications. A stock Altair with no additional IO cards appears to be a very limited beast. Though the article's description of the programming task is essentially correct flipping switches to input the binary opcodesthe description of the output isn't quite spot-on. The LEDs of the Altair are connected directly to the address bus and data bus.

So, rather than writing a program to "make the lights flash", when the CPU was executing instructions, the lights would flash wildly, reflecting whatever signals were present on the bus. If the program wasn't branching, you could discern the binary incrementing of the address lines, but that's about it. When the user was programming the Altair, the CPU is halted. Essentially, during programming, nothing is happening inside the machine. Another big thanks to Mike Douglas who spent countless hours hunting down, collecting and getting this software to work and then made it all available on his altairclone. The disk and hard disk images included in the "disks" subdirectory of the source archive were also taken altairclone. Again, Mike has done an amazing job finding all that software and then Altair Gadget Serial functioning disk images that can be used by the Altair community.

I only used a selection of the software so you may want to head over to altairclone. Chris Davis of Altairduino. Please log in or sign up to comment.
